I think back pain might be one of the worst things in the world. Not only is it reminding me that I’m getting old, but it’s also making it really difficult to get any work done at all. Every time I sit down at my desk, I feel a stabbing pain in my lower spine and as the day progresses it just gets worse and worse until I just can’t take it anymore. I’ve tried all kinds of painkillers, and although they work for a while, eventually the pain always comes back.
Then I read an article that said my back pain could be being made worse, or even caused, by sitting in the wrong kind of office chair. People like me who sit at a desk for their job often experience back pain because their chair isn’t ergonomically designed. I did some research about back pain and I discovered a few interesting things. It’s a fact that more people than ever before are suffering from chronic and acute back pain, probably as a result of our sedentary lifestyles.

There are so many jobs these days that involve sitting down for extended periods – secretaries, managers, checkout operators, people who work from home… it’s no wonder that more people than ever before are going to their doctors looking for relief. However, I was willing to try anything, and one of the remedies that I found was choosing an ergonomically designed office chair.
I decided that it was time to invest in a chair that was specially designed for people like me who are prone to having a bad back. I came up with three different options to choose from.
Humanscale Freedom Chair
The first chair on my shortlist was the Humanscale Freedom Chair. This is actually a pretty famous model since it has appeared on TV in numerous action dramas because of its stylish and sleek design. However, this chair isn’t just a pretty face, it is also ergonomically designed, offering the user the benefits of several manually adjusted controls to get the perfect feel. This popular chair is ideal for people like me who are average in build and height and as it allows the ability to adjust the height of the back of the chair, it is even easy to make sure that I get the support I need for my spine.
Steelcase Think Chair
The Steelcase Think Chair is a top seller and is an incredibly ergonomically designed chair allowing for lots of fine tuning for perfect comfort. It’s very adjustable and it is suited to all kinds of body types. Although the lumbar support may not be the best, it has a seat pan at the perfect depth and it also has a breathable back so I can stay comfortable during the working day.

Herman Miller Embody
This chair is pretty expensive, but it does come with a 12-year guarantee which is pretty good. It is especially perfect for people like me who would rather recline a little than sit bolt upright at work. The tilt limiter and backfit adjustment are ideal for getting the optimal position to suit my needs. Comfortable and ergonomically supportive, this chair is ideal for making sure that I get all my work done without being in pain all day.
Having weighed up all of the pros and cons, I eventually decided that the Herman Miller Embody was worth the extra investment. I really valued the idea of being able to get the perfect minute adjustments to suit my needs so that my back can be as comfortable as possible, and I like the fact that it is specifically designed for people like me who prefer a slight recline when working.
